It is nearing that time of year when the heavy hitters start coming out with their top recommendations, must-read, must-buy lists of the best writing to come out in 2016. As always this was another year of remarkable and inventive writing, with collections, novels, epics and debuts emerging from all around the world with shared liveliness and excitement. From the well-known book purveyors of Powell’s, Elliott Bay Bookstore to The Strand and McNally Jackson to my local favorite, Looking Glass Books, the titles were always there hinting at new worlds and stories and lives. Unfortunately, most remain on my own To-Read List, but they remain with renewed purpose and hope.
Over the next few weeks I will be going back over my checklist and selecting a handful of favorites and recommendations. As you reflect on your year of reading, think about which blockbuster debut you had to buy, or that undiscovered collection that startled you or that you held onto even past the due date at the local library so you could finish.
Keep an eye out for these upcoming year-end reads and in the meantime, check out the latest from the New York Times 100 Notables.
